Providing a safe, creative, and nurturing environment for your child
Providing a safe, creative, and nurturing environment for your child
Thank you for giving JOY Child Learning Center the opportunity to
furnish you with information regarding our facility. We are located
at 11200 Steeplecrest Drive in Houston, Texas.
When you visit JOY you will discover that our Center has been
designed to provide a secure, warm, and loving atmosphere for your
child. Our caring directors and teachers help foster your child's
development through experiences in art, play, and learning. Our
program concentrates on your child's individual needs and his/her
intellectual, social, and emotional development. Our English
curriculum is continually adjusted so as to adapt to the
developmental needs of the children we care for.
At the same time, it is also our responsibility to shift focus of
curriculum and programming to a very important basic. It is vital
that all of us play a role in improving your child's quality of childhood.
Childhood is a unique and powerful time. One's good character,
morals, ability to form relationships, and view of one's self as a valued
individual is greatly influenced by good childhood experiences. Our
children should be able to one day look back on their childhood and
be imbued with an overall feeling of accomplishment and happiness.
This distinctive part of the curriculum is one that we cannot set in
black and white, rather it is an overall perception of the
environment your child is in. It is the result of many special
attributes in staff attitude about the significance of our work and
the commitment to making your child's childhood a joyful and
positive experience.
JOY is a privately operated, local center. Our policies and child care
decisions are not made in corporation rooms, but by our trained staff
who are continually interacting and responding to the children's and
parent's daily needs. JOY doesn't spend large sums of
money on gimmicks and expensive advertising campaigns so as to
appear attractive. Instead, JOY invests in its teachers and its Center,
because that is the best way to provide quality care for those who
need it. JOY'S principle source of advertising are the happy and
confident children we are helping to bring up and the many
recommendations of our satisfied parents.
In partnership with parents, JOY is eager to make a great difference
in the lives of children by bringing out their very best qualities in a
secure and loving environment. We invite you to tour our Center
at any time and discover the happiness that flourishes at JOY Child
Learning Center.
Sincerely,
Mel Bydalek / JOY'S Director
"Before there can be successful students, there must first be great teachers."
JOY believes teaching is an art form,
because of the simple fact that it requires successful teachers to be constantly inventive, like artists, when dealing with the differing abilities and needs of children. Children have many ways of being smart-through words, numbers, pictures, music, physical expression, and self understanding. Each child has a unique intelligence style for absorbing, retaining, and applying knowledge. Therefore, JOY continually adjusts its curriculum so as to adapt to the unique developmental needs of your child.
JOY Child Learning Center is a family
operated child care center that became
established on August 1, 2006. Mel Bydalek is the First Director/Fine Arts instructor and Hsiu-Jung (Cher) Bydalek is the Second Director/Enrollment Administrator.
Mel and Cher Bydalek have taught children
at HAPPY DAYS CHILD LEARNING CENTER
(Houston, Texas) and at ENGLISH
LANGUAGE SCHOOLS INTERNATIONAL (ELSI
TAIWAN). After leaving ELSI, Mel and Cher
started their own child learning center
business (in Taipei), for children ages
2 to 13 years old, and taught a wide range
of academic subjects with special emphasis
on phonics, reading, writing, and creative
thinking.
Mel and Cher encourage parents
to observe and assist their children practicing their new life skills. It takes a "village to raise a child" and the partnerships Mel and Cher have with its children's parents is the essential village in a child's early life that helps foment their great character and talents.
JOY's teachers are acutely aware of children's rapid mental development from age one to six years old, provide open-ended learning activities and structured lessons. JOY'S teachers use a proven curriculum, Abeka and English/Phonics work sheets to teach and help young children develop strong language and cognitive abilities. Often, more than fifty percent of JOY'S Pre-K students pass the gifted intelligence tests at their elementary schools and/or are promoted to the next grade level.
JOY'S learning program is also supplemented with HOORAY FOR ENGLISH material and a
a wide range of peripheral educational books, video/dvd media, computers, and original fine art that help to bring to life the curriculum's subject matter and children's interest in learning more. Studies have shown that young children are dynamic learners who learn best by moving, speaking, and playing as much as possible. Therefore, JOY'S teachers introduce academic topics, to children, much like the rules of a fun outdoor game. After a short session of rule study (basic academics), JOY'S teachers employ TPR (Total Physical Response) activities which allow children to physically play-out what they have learned. The more senses children use during TPR activities, then, the more profound is their retention of the learned material.
JOY Child Learning Center's educational program is aligned well with Texas's new higher elementary school standards. It is keenly focused on providing its young children with a preschool education that exceeds the standards of most daycare centers in the area. JOY prepares all its enrolled children for a successful transition into Texas's elementary schools.
JOY Child Learning Center's preschool educational program is divided into academic sessions, brainstorming sessions, and TPR
activities. Academic sessions emphasize the following skills*: basic phonics, pre-reading, pre-writing, pre-math, and pre-science. Then, children's newly learned skills are put into
practice through a creative class of brainstorming. Teachers help promote children's inference, analytical, and comprehension skills through group reading, discussions, and critiques. Students are
encouraged to question everything and to think in terms of "what if...?". After brainstorming, JOY'S daily educational program concludes with TPR activities which allow children to physically play-out what they have learned. TPR activities make learning life skills an easy and fun experience.
JOY'S Art program is about creative teaching, learning, and the innovative application of one's talents. At JOY, children can learn painting, drawing, 2 & 3D design, sculpture, and pottery every week*. Except for the art materials, this program is included in the tuition price. All five of children's developmental domains-physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and language development-are cultivated in this one creative program. The creation of art demands coordination of a child's five developmental domains in manipulating materials, expressing a concept, and constant effort in thinking of new and better ways of using materials. JOY'S Art program will enlighten and help blossom your child's artistic nature far beyond the ordinary programs of others.
* Skills are taught in different combinations
and may not include all 5 skills for each day.
SCHOOL AGE FINE ARTS PROGRAM
In 2024, JOY'S Director, Mel Bydalek, will be offering master level teaching of drawing and painting for young school-age children. Mel received his MFA (Master of Fine Arts)
degree in painting from the UNIVERSITY OF
HOUSTON and has taught painting and
drawing at HOUSTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE and the UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON. In 1985, he was honored by the ART LEAGUE of HOUSTON as an emerging artist. He has also won several art awards, was once a commercial artist and is presently painting and drawing from nature and live models. Examples of his work are provided in the page below.
JOY is a 3,000 square foot, stand alone, child care center. It is adjoined with a fully furnished 11,450 square foot playground. Security is
provided by a pass code entrance door and closed circuit tv cameras that monitor the Center's grounds as well as each classroom. All meals are prepared daily, on site, in our fully equipped kitchen.
JOY'S interior space is divided into four purposeful rooms. Two rooms are designed to help 3 and 4 year old children learn their basic academic and fine motor skills, more productively, by providing them with noise
dampening floors and ceilings. A third room is designed to help toddlers, ages 18 months to 3
years old, safely explore their environment by providing them with cushy furnishings and
toddler-appropriate toys.
A fourth room, alternately shared by all groups, affords children 1,200 square feet of activity space. In this large area, energetic children can involve themselves with art, recreational games, and many other multi-sensory activities. 10-foot ceilings provide our young scholars with spacious surroundings. Many classrooms have long horizontal windows for added natural light. These studio-like qualities help children feel relaxed, focused and inspired.
For limited periods, these environments are designed for focused, structured learning, facilitated by JOY'S teachers, that is brought to life in an uncluttered space. Then, the rooms are transitioned to open-ended exploration and play with child age-appropriate materials. In a word, JOY'S child environments are dynamic spaces for our teacher's guidance, instruction, and our children's creative child learning. Our children excel in good character, creative thinking, and language arts. In partnership with you, let's bring out the best in your child.
Experience the difference with our exceptional child care program. Our team of qualified educators provides a fun and stimulating environment for your child's growth and development.
